Kerala ( Varkala )

Journey to the Land of Coconut Trees And Backwaters – Kerala (Part 3)

Varkala: A beautiful tiny township that lies on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram city attracts thousands of foreign and domestic tourists every year. Varkala is the only site in Kerala where cliffs are found alongside the Arabian Sea. We spent our next two days at Zostel Varkala, right next to the famous Black Sand Beach. Varkala is all known for its beaches; one of the most famous beaches is Black Sand Beach, where the sand is actually black.

Apart from the black sand beach, other famous beaches are Papanasam Beach and Kappil Beach, which famous for water sports.  The next morning we went to Kappil Beach to try some water sports. There are limited activities available at the beach, which include – Jet Ski, Kayaking, Speed Boat, Banana Ride, and Shikara ride; all these rides will cost you not more than 350 INR. We decided to try our luck in Speed Boat, and fortunately, it was the best decision ever.

One valuable advice: If you are looking for some chilled beer, just Don’t buy it from the café in the North cliff Market near the black sand beach. They have unnecessarily overpriced all its items. Walk towards helipad via North Cliff Market, there is a bar (Theka) at the Helipad, which has a variety of beers available, including Heineken, Tuborg, Budweiser, and several other brands and the prices are almost 50 to 100 INR less than what these cafes are charging per bottle.

How to Reach

The best way to reach Varkala is by train; there are plenty of trains available from Ernakulam Town Junction Railway Station. Usually, it takes 4 hours from Kochi to reach Varkala, and 1 hour from Thiruvananthapuram city.

Nearest Airport: Thiruvananthapuram Airport
